Time to show us what you've got! Deep ripping with a 10 shank Zone-Builder Subsoiler by Unverferth. We are excited to see the results of this in the 2021 crop. And with the new Optitrac tires by Titan Tires we expect greatly improved traction.
And just when we thought we had it all figured out our fertilizer showed up with a random load of gravel!

    4. MATTCRAZTEX

You can't get rid of compaction thru no-till in some soils that's for sure. Sometimes tillage is good.

    5. Murilo Yung

Man, I'm brazilian and I got so happy that I understand 99% of what you are talking, soooo fast ahahahhahah Keep up with the good work and videos! Amazing job

    6. David Lindemann

U guys need to let those tires down a little further

    7. Air Force 1

Just realized in the first part of the vid how similar your actual farm looks to the one in fs19. That’s crazy.

    8. R u b e d o

Great drone photography... Pulling that tillermibob must have taken a lot of power. It was surprising that the machine had problems.. Its all new machine.? Teething trouble.? Best wishes to everyone. Mind how you go.

    9. Jonathan L

Although I'm half way around the world from this farm, I feel like I'm at home when I watch these video clips.

Most people sweeten the soil with lime, but if you have an alkaline based soil that keeps getting worse, would it help to mix in some acidic soils? We have a lot of pine and spruce up here in NS, CA and the soil is black with all the needles and matter that mixes into the soil. Might help, but should ask. Pine bark mulch is pretty cheap up here.

    12. Coffee Man

have you tried sulfates on the alkali flats?

      1. Robert Welker

Not yet. Some have tried different treatments.

    13. Declan Wayman

I played this map on FS19

    14. Brian Pelletier

CAT-astrophe; Rockin' my field work... love it!!!

    15. Chris Anthony

being from the east coast, it's mind boggling to me to see how big these fields are.

    16. Ivan Hansen

how many pounds or tons of fertilizer do you use a year, God Bless and please stay safe "break" arms

      1. Robert Welker

Around 60 units of N at seeding with our annual rainfall of 8".

    17. Avery Woodrum

We run one of those on our farm

    18. Steve Faulkner

How deep you ripping? How often do the ripper points need resurfaced or replaced ? Alkali not good for growing. Thank you for old memories.

      1. Robert Welker

This is our first time at doing ripping. Started at 12" but the weather turned to winter so not as much trial happened.

    19. Steven Johnson

When I RIP it usually gets us around 6 to 10 bu gain on corn in s/w iowa and the roots go much deeper which gives it better standabillity in wind.

    20. C Chebuhar

      Big bud ! 💪

    21. J Essary Farms

      I love deep ripping.

    22. Cathy Doe

Don't deep rip ground that has no growth on it. Your (small) soil particles will just get washed down your freshly formed cracks and form a new hardpan - only deeper. You need soil biology to stabilize the soil immediately. Don't waste your time and fuel.

    23. Bob West

In England, the best crop to plant after subsoiling is canola.

    24. fortrastos

Back of Feb 22, on the detoured road trip from Cali to Las Vegas, Leg arms and Robert stopped to see the world's second largest tractor. Robert explained carefully that in Cali they had to deep rip the soil to break up the hard pan that develops because of the lack of the freeze/thaw you have at your farm. Now Nick says that isn't true. What's the real story here?

      1. fortrastos

@Robert Welker Thanks for the little hydrology/geology lesson. I needed that.

      2. Robert Welker

There is relief of shallow compaction by the freeze/thaw here. But if the soil profile is dry and frost doesn't penetrate deep enough I'm seeing more compaction. In California they use so much irrigation water it seals the ancient lake soils by evaporating the salts to the surface.

    25. Ormathon

Thats a cute lil ripper ... seen a vid here on youtube where they dig 2m deep.. but they needed 3 dozers to pull it and it only had 1 blade since it dug that deep xD. You could almost pull the thing with the big bud tho since those dozers had 650 HP combined.. might slip like bambi on ice tho >.>.

      1. Ormathon

@Welker Farms Found the clip, its a proper beast of tech, and custom made. kgup.info/get/nYCCY4eSm6KopJ0/video

      2. Welker Farms

That is awesome, I bet you can feel the ground shake.

    26. Kevin Klingner

Super phosphate is even worse. As lit has acid in it the break the rock form down.

    27. Longliner 205A

What model transmission is used in the big bud tractors?

      1. Robert Welker

        9 speed Twin Disk TD-91-2610

    28. SoullessMeatVehicle

I have that same ripper... i use it every fall, for fall tillage... on my farm...in farming sim lol

    29. earnest 1212

@welker farms looks like to me you could come up with a filter water drop to drain the water slow and not lose product, if you had a filter over the drop hole and maybe some wet dry over that it will drain.somthing like a greese filler in reverse

    30. DarkVoidIII

Have you talked to a raw materials company about gathering up the salt laden ground and having it moved someplace else? It must be a low quality salt content if you couldn't get someone to take it off your hands for reprocessing, used as clean fill for a site that won't care about salt, or whatever other uses they might have for it.

      1. Robert Welker

More of calcium, magnesium compounds with sodium.

    31. upupaepops

For those interested .. Big Bud content starts at 06:30 .....

    32. Earl Lutz

Nice to see the "Big Bud" work. I have an old John Deere 3020, that probably looks like a toy to you guys, but I only have 20 acres, & my farming, is just a small supplement, for me.

    33. Brett Colburn

      How deep are you ripping?

      1. Robert Welker

        12"

    34. David LeCloux

Did the ripper ever chatter when you hit some tough spots?

      1. Robert Welker

Not too much chatter. Bud would start digging.

    35. David Chain

      That’s a a awesome site

    36. swift220

Add bulk/mulch and gypsum to the alkali. Works quick.

    37. [F4H] Heatseeker

I am playing your farm map on FS19 its awesome, and using the big bud tractors.

    38. david merhar

I really asking myself how many hours do you guy make in this tractor on a year

      1. Robert Welker

We vary, depending on any tillage outside of planting. 200 hrs for planting.

    39. Igor Lisetski

What’s call the brand of deep riper ? Anybody know?

      1. Robert Welker

        Unverferth Zone Builder.

    40. Steve French

Awesome, you boys have all the toys 👍

    41. Eric Beightol

you can rinse out your fertilizer auger if you mix up some alkaline water. It neutralizes the acidic fertilizer and might save some auger life. Plus you have the alkaline on the farm. Just a thought

    42. Koert Tijdens

Maybe the ripper is too wide. Better not lower the wings.

    43. Chahat Gaming

I am from India, Punjab and I love your farming

    44. Trevor Bacelli

Hello Fellows, this company makes very good subsoilers it maybe of interest , it would be much cheaper than the States ,they make a 40 ft model, this is just right for Big Bud. 48. Floyd Ferguson

    50. Michelle Hayward

Are you going to do a farming simulator 19 millennial farmer map video so please I’m begging you I’ve been a subscriber since I don’t know how long?

    51. Johnny Holland

Cool very cool... How is your arm Scott? We used to run IH V rippers that had the reset shanks. They were 3 point lift type. We didn't have Buds to pull them with. We had a couple 8630 Deere's but we did ok with them.

    52. Gerald Roth

      Awesome

    53. Doug Boone

That’s not the original big bud ain’t that a bud Junior

I'd like to try that ripper but it have to be maybe 18ft..I'm not sure how big my stx 450 would be able to pull

      1. Northern farmer

@Robert Welker Yea... and under my 5 inches of topsoil is super hard sticky clay....super hard to pull through...

      2. Robert Welker

All depends on how deep you want or need to go. We can definitely make this Bud snort just going even a couple inches deeper.

    82. mcd5082

      That ripper is huge

    83. Tod Pinkerton

Are you guys going to buy that ripper?

      1. Tod Pinkerton

@Robert Welker hopefully all that red equipment looks really good on your farm. I farm myself with all case ih equipment

      2. Robert Welker

        Might happen

    84. Bill Adams

    86. Ann McGrath

I see Scott, and his fingers are moving! Yay! Not crippled, Scott, healing! Love the Dad quote about cat litter preventing a catastrophe. *giggle* Didn't know that about hard pan, and your part of the world being a former sea bed. All together an interesting video. Thanks.

    87. Steve Rosenberger

Hey it's good to see you Leg Arms up and about. You look like you're doing good.

    88. GerryE EPP

How deep do you rip? Love your videos!

      1. Robert Welker

        Trying 12"

    89. Michael Hill

Good to see Leg Arms in a smaller cast and to be able to do some “work” 😂. Love the deep ripper!!

    90. Lance Dever

I think for an experiment you should spell out big bud with the ripper and see if it shows up next year. Get a drone video of that and it would prove or disprove what happens when you rip. Great drone footage by the way.

      1. Lance Dever

Just have to make them straight!

      2. Robert Welker

Hard to curve those curvy letters. Would be fun to see .

    91. Brett York

      Ahh fighting sodic soil fun👎

    92. Mesh

Does the fertilizer eat at the paint and steel in the bin quickly i know how hard is on an auger just surprised its doable to put in a non stainless bin

      1. Robert Welker

There is a epoxy coating that resist corrosion.

    93. Kevin Halucha

Just a dumb question. Will you go back across it in a different direction to really break up the soil?

      1. Robert Welker

No. We'll see if the one pass works.

    94. Matthew Forrey

      Rock relocation program, Welker style

    95. Cedric Broussard

Big Bud is the man for the plan!!

    96. claterpillar1

About how Deep did you need to rip?

      1. Robert Welker

Well we're trying 12" for now.

    97. Steven Mccullough

      Big Buds rock!

    98. Landyn Struebing

If its red it stays in the shed !!!!!!!!!

      1. Landyn Struebing

@Robert Welker But it should be green!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      2. Robert Welker

        After completing the job.....👍 😁

    99. Kristian Lunde

Wouldn't it increase the fractures in the soil if you ran the ripper diagonal to your normal sowing rows..? Just askin'.. :)

      1. Robert Welker

Did to that to most of the fields.

    100. B Pepper

Thanx a ton, for giving us the buds back ! It's great equipment ... and videos again..... don't break that big plow...
